St. Urbanhof

The St. Urbanhof (formerly also called Münchenhof ) is a listed building in Zofingen , Switzerland . It is located in the old town on the corner of Vordere Hauptgasse and Engelgasse and is classified as a cultural asset of regional importance .

The St. Urban monastery , a former Cistercian abbey in the nearby municipality of Pfaffnau , traditionally had close ties to Zofingen. It had owned warehouses in the city since 1254, where tithes were kept. In 1285 the monastery acquired a property that had been built twenty years earlier and was used from then on as the administrative center of the surrounding fiefs . Even after the Reformation was introduced in Zofingen in 1528 , the St. Urbanhof retained its function. With the abolition of the monastery in 1848, the building became private property.

The oldest parts of the building in the core of St. Urbanhof date from the 13th century, but have been covered by various additions and conversions. The striking corner house got its present appearance essentially in 1625, when the courtyard was built over and combined with the raised wings under one roof. This has a typical shape for the former Bernese dominion . The profiled late Gothic arched windows are mainly from the 18th century . Inside there is a coffered ceiling in the late Renaissance style from around 1625 on the first floor, and a late Baroque stucco ceiling on the ground floor .
