State visit of Queen Elizabeth II to Austria in 1969

On May 5, 1969 , Queen Elizabeth II made her first and so far only state visit to Austria . She came with Prince Philip , the Duke of Edinburgh , and her daughter Princess Anne , whose first official visit abroad was this. They stayed in Austria until May 10, 1969. This was the first official state visit by a UK head of state in 61 years.

Arrivals

The Queen arrived at Vienna-Schwechat Airport on May 5, 1969 at 3:43 p.m. and was welcomed with all military honors , red carpet , 21 gun salutes and a children's choir from Carinthia by the assembled Austrian Federal Government and Federal President Franz Jonas and his wife receive. In addition, some diplomats from countries of the Commonwealth of Nations , around 3,000 onlookers and 100 photographers were waiting for the arrival of the Queen at the airport . During her stay in Vienna, the Queen stayed at the Hotel Imperial on Vienna's Ringstrasse . When they arrived, 50,000 onlookers had gathered to see the Queen arrive. The arrival was secured by a large contingent of the Austrian police , which was on site with hundreds of officers. Both arrival and the following five-day visit were broadcast live by imported only in the same year, color TV in the ORF transmitted. The daughter Anne had to cancel her trip due to a flu illness, but followed on May 7, 1969. The royal society first visited Vienna and then other cities and places in Austria such as Innsbruck , Salzburg , Graz , Klosterneuburg and Piber . The royal guests returned to London on May 10th .

Vienna

State Opera

Due to the Queen's visit, the State Opera's program was even changed. Previously, it had leaked through diplomats that the Queen was not a big opera fan and that the opera Fidelio on the program was probably a torture for her. For this reason, the operetta Fledermaus (cast: Eberhard Wächter , Hilde Güden , Erich Kunz , Renate Holm and Otto Schenk as a frog) was played on the day of the visit .

Vienna presented the Queen with a reproduction of the Saliera by Benvenuto Cellini made of silver, which was made for the first time by the silversmiths Jarosinski & Vaugoin as a gift for this state visit.

Tyrol

From Vienna's Westbahnhof we took the train to Tyrol , where a stop was made at Wörgl station so that the Queen could make a phone call to Buckingham Palace .
