The State Peace and Development Council ( Burmese နိုင်ငံတော် အေးချမ်းသာယာ ရေး နှင့် ဖွံ့ဖြိုးရေး ကောင်စီ , pronunciation : [ nàiNŋàNdɔ éiʤáN θàja Yei Nin pʰṵNpʰyo Yei kaùNsì ]; English State Peace and Development Council , abbreviated SPDC ), the official name of the former's military government of Myanmar (the former Burma ). On February 4, 2011, Thein Sein , former Prime Minister of the military government, was elected President of a new civilian government by the first-time elected parliament . When he took office on March 30, 2011, Than Shwe , chairman of the SPDC since 1992 and thus outgoing head of state, dissolved the SPDC.

After the bloody unrest on August 8, 1988 against the government of the Burma Socialist Program Party (BSPP) set up by General Ne Win , General Saw Maung launched a coup on September 18 of this year against the civilian president Dr. Maung Maung and installed the State Council for restoration of law and order (, State Law and Order Restoration Council ', SLORC). At the same time the previous unity party BSPP ceased to exist. In 1997, the regime renamed in State Peace and Development Council (, State Peace and Development Council 'SPDC).

The regime is accused of brutal persecution of ethnic minorities, opposition groups, students and human rights defenders.

The State Council for Peace and Development consisted of the commanders in chief of the armed forces and the commanders of the regional military commands.

Since General Saw Maung's resignation on April 23, 1992, the chairman of the SPDC was General Than Shwe , Commander-in-Chief of the Myanmar Armed Forces, and thus head of state of Myanmar until February 4, 2011. The deputy chairman was General Maung Aye , Deputy Commander in Chief of the Myanmar Armed Forces and Commander in Chief of the Army .
