The Stadio Comunale Luigi Ferraris (also known as "Marassi" ) is a football stadium in Genoa , Italy . It is one of the few pure football stadiums in Italy without an athletics facility. At the moment it is the home stadium of the two football clubs Sampdoria and CFC Genoa . The current capacity is 36,599 spectators.
history
The stadium was inaugurated on January 22, 1911 with a football match between Genoa 1893, to which it initially belonged, and Inter Milan , which was played in front of around 20,000 spectators. It was christened Stadio Marassi because it is located in the Genoa district of the same name .
The stadium was given its current name on January 1, 1933, after the former captain of the Genoa football team in 1893, Luigi Ferraris . The Stadio Luigi Ferraris was considered one of the most modern stadiums at that time and offered space for 30,000 visitors. It was also the venue for the 1934 World Cup and hosted a round of 16 match on May 27.
In 1946, Genoa FC sold the arena to the city of Genoa in 1893. It then became the home of local rivals Sampdoria Genoa.
On February 27, 1949, a match between the national teams of Italy and Portugal reached the record attendance of 60,000 that is still in place today.
Between July 1987 and September 1989, the Luigi Ferraris was completely demolished and rebuilt on the occasion of the 1990 World Cup while the game was running. The most striking feature of the sports facility are the four towers in the stadium corners. On the one hand, they support the roof structure; on the other hand, the floodlight system is integrated in them . They also divide the grandstands into four separate areas.
In April 2020, Mayor Marco Bucci announced the sale of the municipal stadium. Since the renovation for the 1990 World Cup, not much has happened in the stadium and should change with the sale. Among other things, the sale or long-term lease to one or both clubs, Sampdoria and the GFC, would be envisaged in order to modernize the aging Stadio Luigi Ferraris or to replace it with a new building. Another option would be another company with an idea to redesign or rebuild the football site.
