Porter Stoddard is a wealthy architect . He has homes on Park Avenue and the Hamptons in New York City, as well as a cabin in west Sun Valley. He has been married to the equally successful interior designer Ellie for 25 years, but has an affair with the cellist Alex.

There are difficulties in the marriage of their best friends. Mona Morris wants a divorce from her husband Griffin. She plans to travel to Mississippi to see her childhood home. Worried about Mona's depression and the state of her marriage, Ellie feels she shouldn't be alone. She asks Porter to accompany Mona south. There they start an affair .

Porter and Griffin want to fly to Sun Valley themselves to escape their worries. Porter begins another affair with Eugenie Claybourne, a spoiled heiress whose father doesn't want men with his daughter and always has his shotgun loaded.

When Porter returns to New York City, his wife leaves him.

The film received mixed reviews. In the Internet Movie Database , the film received an average rating of 4.4 out of 10 in over 4,000 reviews. Rotten Tomatoes ' critics got 14% positive reviews. At Metacritic , the critics got 34% positive reviews.

Wesley Morris scoffed in the San Francisco Chronicle that the film wasn't bad enough to bring about the end of the world. He called the comedy a 'neurotic festival' by Warren Beatty. The screenwriter Buck Henry tries in vain to patch up the sketchy jokes. The film seems like a bad French sex farce.

Rolf von der Reith praised the portrayals in TV Today 15/2001 but criticized the script.
