history

The Wolgast "coffee mill" (2013)

The half-timbered warehouse with a Dutch roof construction, which was built in 1660, is the oldest secular building in the city. After the city was burned down by Russian troops during the Great Northern War in 1713 , the granary was one of the three remaining buildings.

In 1840 the building was converted into a restaurant. A dance hall was set up in the extension. The restaurant existed under the name "Goldene Traube" until after the Second World War . The house then served as refugee accommodation.

In 1955 a home parlor was set up in the building, which had three rooms available until 1975. In 1976 the house, which had become very dilapidated, had to be closed. In 1982 the building was renovated and the city history museum was set up on two floors. Since the restoration of the two top floors in 1995, it has comprised around 700 m² of exhibition space.

The themes of the exhibitions are the time of the Dukes of Pomerania- Wolgast, who had their seat in the former Wolgast Castle , the Swedish era as well as trade, shipbuilding and industry in Wolgast in the 19th and 20th centuries. Folk art exhibits, a classroom and a grocery store from 1920 can also be viewed. The “coffee mill” currently houses the world's largest collection of Pomeranian fishing carpets .

The museums of the city of Wolgast also include the Rungehaus , the Stralsund ferry and the Gertruden Chapel .
