City church St. Johannis in Ticino

The town church Ticino is the Gothic St. John's Church in the historic center in Ticino in the district of Rostock in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern . The parish belongs to the Rostock provost in the Mecklenburg parish of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany .

Chronicle and description

Ticino has belonged to Mecklenburg since 1323, after being granted city rights shortly before . At this time, the early Gothic choir of the town church was built and in 1350 St. Johannis was consecrated.

A domed vault with eight ribs is located above the square choir made of field stones . There are three groups of windows on the east and south walls. In the south wall was an early Gothic portal of bricks , which is now walled up. The portal walls are stepped down with set columns with bud capitals .

The three- aisled nave of the basilica made of bricks with its western facing gable dates from the middle of the 14th century. The three bays of the central nave originally had Gothic vaults . The vaults were also prepared for the two aisles. Today, however, all three ships have flat ceilings.

Three Gothic arcades and eight corner pillars with service templates and arched panels support the high walls of the central nave. Three upper clad windows in the arches have light openings.

The exterior of the nave is characterized by the four strong struts and the three unframed high Gothic windows. Above that there is a simply structured cornice, the pent roofs of the side aisles and the gable roof of the central nave with a western roof tower. The choir and vestibule are connected to the east and west.

The church was also damaged by a city fire in 1728. During the restoration, the roof tower was placed on top of the gable roof. From 1896 to 1898 the church was completely renovated by master builder Gotthilf Ludwig Möckel and a vestibule was added on the west side. Inside the church, the baroque furnishings were replaced by one in the neo-Gothic style of the time. The triforic painting is similar to the model from the Doberan Minster .

Interior

The baroque pulpit dates from around 1730. The pews in the church are from 1728.
