City museum in Bretten

The Stadtmuseum im Schweizer Hof is a museum in Bretten (Baden-Württemberg). It was opened in June 2002 and is publicly owned.

building

The “Schweizer Hof”, located in the heart of Bretten's old town, is a half-timbered building built in 1707/08 and a typical testimony to the architecture of the reconstruction time of Bretten after the great city fire of 1689. The property was used as a guest house, at times also as a private brewery , for more than two and a half centuries and used as a distillery . The house, which had become dilapidated after around twenty years of vacancy in the 1990s, was acquired by the city of Bretten in 1996 and (with the support of the State Monuments Office and the Baden-Württemberg Monument Foundation as well as numerous donors from the citizenry) by the Brettener Heimat citizens' initiative from 1997 to 2001 - and monument preservation refurbished in around 36,000 voluntary hours of work.

The cellar vaults, which are stepped down several times, come from the previous building, the former Bretten tithe house of the Frauenalb monastery that was destroyed in the Palatinate War of Succession . They later served as storage and ice cellars for the inn and brewery.

In addition to the city and regional history exhibitions, there are always special exhibitions on overarching topics of cultural history, usually with the participation of numerous external lenders and in cooperation with other museums . All special exhibitions have an accompanying program with thematic special tours, demonstrations, readings, musical performances, etc.
