Main line 2 (Düsseldorf tram)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The term trunk line 2 is used to describe one of the six light rail lines in the light rail network of the North Rhine-Westphalian state capital Düsseldorf . This connects the two cities of Krefeld and Neuss with the southeastern districts of Düsseldorf. Operation on this route began on August 6, 1988 with three light rail lines (U70, U74 and U76). On September 26, 1993, two more (U75 and U77) were added as a result of a route extension.

history

Earlier planning

A west route from Krefeld to east Düsseldorf already existed in the early subway plans of the state capital Düsseldorf. The western section of this route is based on the routing of the K-Bahn . Accordingly, the original plans differ primarily with regard to the eastern section. The last council decision for a Düsseldorf subway network led this section through the northern Eller and then pivoted further east into the Lierenfeld district . This swing was included in the long-term tram plans until the 1980s, but it was never realized. Instead, the line was continued according to the existing tram route to Düsseldorf-Eller Mitte station.

At the request of the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia, the subway plans of the city of Düsseldorf were integrated into the conception for a Rhine-Ruhr urban railway network at the beginning of the 1970s . Adjustments to the network planning were made taking into account the funding conditions that are now in force. The existing tram connection to Neuss has now also been integrated and planned as a junction at Belsenplatz on a new route. Its course was planned along a section of the existing railway line Mönchengladbach – Düsseldorf , which was to be closed in the foreseeable future . However, these plans were not pursued any further.

course

Krefeld - Oberkassel

The light rail line begins in the center of Krefeld and runs south-east via Krefeld main station . There it reaches the urban area of Meerbusch . Here the line has been upgraded to the light rail standard and all stops have elevated platforms. At the level of the Böhler works, the line crosses the city limits between Meerbusch and Düsseldorf and is led into the Lörick district. This happens in the further course in the middle of the Hansaallee in the district of Heerdt. At Prinzenpark there has been a branch to the Seestern office district since 1993 . Here, too, like in Meerbusch, the line is built in line with the Stadtbahn standard and equipped with elevated platforms.

Neuss - Oberkassel

The second branch of the light rail line begins at Neuss main station, where there are transfer connections to regional traffic, and meets the S-Bahn network again at Neuss Am Kaiser station . A little later, the route passes the city limits between Neuss and Düsseldorf and reaches the Heerdt district. From the Handweiser stop, the route is guided on its own track, but there are no elevated platforms that would allow stepless entry.

Oberkassel - old town

Both sections merge at the Belsenplatz stop. From there it is led to the middle of Luegallee and thus passes the Oberkassel district . Over the Oberkasseler Brücke the route, also with its own railway body, crosses the Rhine and reaches the Tonhalle / Ehrenhof underground station on the right bank of the Rhine .

Inner city tunnel

In the center of Düsseldorf city center, the second trunk line will be merged with the first trunk line in a joint structure. The subway stations Heinrich-Heine-Allee , Steinstraße / Königsallee , Oststraße and Hauptbahnhof are passed.

Flingern tunnel

The tunnel in the Flingern-Süd district was opened on September 26, 1993 as an extension of the inner city tunnel . This crosses under the Oberbilk district , passes the Handelszentrum / Moskauer Straße underground station and reaches the Flingern-Süd district at Kettwiger Straße underground station .

Flingern - Eller

In the course of Erkrather Straße, the route is led back above ground via a ramp. The higher standard of construction ends at the Lierenfeld Betriebshof stop, which is the last to be equipped with an elevated platform. The Eller district will then be accessed via six further stops, and the main line will finally end at Vennhauser Allee.

business

All light rail lines on trunk line 2 are operated by Rheinbahn AG as part of the Rhein-Ruhr transport association.
