Stan Fox

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stanley Cole Fuchs , known as Stan Fox (born July 7, 1952 in Janesville , Wisconsin , † December 18, 2000 in Waiouru , New Zealand ) was an American racing car driver .

Success with the Midget Cars

At the beginning of his career, Stan Fox was best known as a midget car driver. He won countless titles on the sand ovals of the midget cars and, especially in the years in the USAC ( United States Auto Club ) Midget Car series from 1980 onwards, quickly gained national fame.

In the CART series

In 1984 Fox tried the CART series with moderate success . At the wheel of a March 83C Cosworth Fox contested five championship races (in another five races he missed the qualification) without scoring a point.

Starting in 1987 , Fox participated regularly in the Indianapolis 500 . He was one of the last Midget Car pilots to follow this traditional connection (until the early 1970s, the oval and road races of today's ChampCar , together with the Midget Cars, were part of the USAC championship) and active in both racing series has been.

The best result that Fox achieved was a seventh place on his debut in 1987 , the best starting position an eleventh place in his last race in 1995 .

The Indianapolis accident

In 1995 there was a serious accident in Indianapolis on the first lap of the race in which five cars were involved. By the middle of Turn 1, Stan Fox had lost control of his Reynard and the car was going across the perimeter wall. Fox tore the American Eddie Cheever's car with him and was catapulted into the air by him. The top of the Reynard hit the wall, breaking the bolide in two at the cockpit level.

The buckled Fox was then thrown several times against the boundary wall in only half the cockpit and the car finally slid along it a little longer.

Amazingly, Fox hadn't broken anything in the accident but passed out and was rushed to the hospital. Serious head injuries were diagnosed there. Fox spent several months in the hospital and in rehabilitation.

Stan Fox stopped racing after the accident.

Fatal accident in road traffic

In 2000, Fox had a fatal accident as the passenger in a private van in a head-on collision around 300 kilometers south of Auckland (New Zealand) . He had been in New Zealand to visit car races and friends. In 1995, Fox was inducted into the National Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame . The USAC has organized the championship run in Plymouth (Wisconsin) since 2001 as the "Stan Fox Memorial Race".
