Standard length
The standard length , abbreviated SL, is a measure in ichthyology and describes the length of a fish from the foremost end of the animal to the base of the caudal fin . It is used as a reference measure for the relative lengths of body parts such as the head. Compared to the total length, abbreviated TL from the English Total length, it can be determined more reliably, since the caudal fin is often flexible or - especially in preserved specimens - damaged.
