Edition of West End Games

Star Wars from West End Games (WEG) was published for the tenth anniversary of Star Wars in 1987. It was designed by Greg Costikyan and survived ten years (1987-1997). The (already very extensive) Star Wars universe has been considerably expanded and deepened in over one hundred source books and adventures . It is noteworthy that these books were not only bought by role-players, but also by a large number of Star Wars fans, who were very interested in the very detailed information about spaceships, characters etc. they contained. Authors of the Star Wars novels also used the role-play works as a reference.

The rule system was based exclusively on six-sided dice. In addition to main attributes, there were also skills. Success tests were rolled against an abstract level of difficulty. Overall, it was a simple, quick, and heroic system. Heroic actions could be carried out with so-called Force Points . If a player used this for evil deeds, his character could switch to the dark side of the force and thus became a non-player character.

A few of the books by Welt der Spiele have been translated into German. In 1997, the role-playing game was discontinued when the West End Games went bankrupt.

Issued by Wizard of the Coast

In 1999, Wizards of the Coast (WotC) was licensed to develop a new Star Wars role-playing game system that they developed based on their d20 system . In addition to many new authors, some of the old developers who already worked on the books of West End Games could be won. It was designed by Bill Slavicsek, Andy Collins and JD Wiker. After the Core Rulebook was published in autumn 2000, new extensions and source books were constantly appearing. On June 5, 2007, the previous rules of the d20 system were modified and in some cases greatly simplified with the appearance of the Saga Edition . There was also an update to all six films.

At times, a separate magazine called Star Wars Gamer was published, which mainly dealt with the role-playing system, but was discontinued after only ten issues. In addition to source books and adventures, WotC periodically publish new adventures and information on their website for free.

With the expiry of the license in May 2010, Wizards of the Coast discontinued its Star Wars product line (role and miniature games).

German translations of the role play books by WotC were not produced and are very unlikely due to the expired license.

Edition of Fantasy Flight Games

In August 2011 Fantasy Flight Games (FFG) published a press release . FFG is now in possession of a license for miniature games, card games and role-playing games in the Star Wars universe. A miniatures game has been announced for 2012 with X-Wing and an expandable card game with Star Wars - The Card Game . In 2012, FFG announced that Star Wars 3 should have control systems.

Edge of the Empire The first, Edge of the Empire (German: On the edge of the empire), deals with the boundaries of the galaxy and its inhabitants. The English set of rules appeared in mid-2013, the German appeared in June 2014.

Age of Rebellion The second offshoot of the role-playing game (German: Age of Rebellion) deals with the rebellion against the galactic empire and you take on the role of a rebel. The beginner set was released in 2014.

Force and Destiny The third offshoot (German: Power and Destiny) deals with the Jedi and the power within the rebellion era.

The Force Awakens 2016 was a beginner's set (German: The Awakening of Power), about nine months after the appearance of the Star Wars movie of the same name . No new set of rules was introduced here; instead, the set provides an introduction to the three existing sets of rules.

The German edition of the role-playing games was initially published by Heidelberger Spieleverlag , but switched to Ulisses Spiele in 2015 .
