Historical background

Revers Vereinstaler Freie Stadt Frankfurt from 1865

Frankfurt am Main joined the German Customs Union on January 2, 1836 . In 1837, the Zollverein redefined the monetary standard for Kurant coins in the Munich Mint Treaty . In future, one mark of fine silver (233.85 grams) should correspond to 24 ½ guilders . The motto was needed to stamp it on the edge of the Frankfurt guilder. The club thalers valid from 1857 and their special coins, for example for the Frankfurt Fürstentag 1863, received this border decoration.

After the forcible annexation of the Free City of Frankfurt by the Kingdom of Prussia in 1866, the motto acquired political significance because it stood for the citizens' right to self-determination . The Frankfurt vernacular interpreted the claim in its own way: Strong in law, weak in battle! (in Frankfurterisch : Stack im Rescht, weak in Gefescht! ), since the history of Frankfurt am Main is indeed poor in military exploits.

The Bürgersaalbau , an extension of the historic town hall complex that was built from 1897 to 1900, was decorated with a Frankfurt eagle as a facade decoration in sandstone . A banner with the motto is located above him as a relief . The Golden Book of the City of Frankfurt am Main , created in 1907, also bears the eagle with the motto in golden letters as a decoration on the cover.

The Catholic student association KDSt.V., founded in Frankfurt in 1913 and still based there today . Hasso-Nassovia Frankfurt am Main adopted the motto when it was founded and is still running it.
