Location of the municipality of Stedesdorf in the district of Wittmund

Stedesdorf is a municipality in East Friesland in the Samtgemeinde Esens in the Wittmund district in Lower Saxony .

geography

Stedesdorf is a Geestrandsiedlung and lies on the connecting road between Esens (about four kilometers northwest of Stedesdorf) and Wittmund (about nine kilometers southeast).

In addition to the village of Stedesdorf, the municipality includes the districts of Mamburg , Osteraccum and Thunum .

history

The first mention of the village of Stedesdorf can be found in a deed of donation from Archbishop Adalbero of Bremen. In this document, which was drawn up in 1137, the amount of four marks from our Kuria Stedesdorpe ( quatuor marce den curia nostra Stedesdorpe ) is allocated to the newly founded Premonstratensian monastery in Stade . Whether Stedesdorpe is Stedesdorf is, however, controversial. Also Steddorp in Rotenburg (Wümme) could refer to in this document.

In the village of Thunum there was probably a castle in earlier times . The castle in Thunum is proven up to the year 1344. Mamburg was mentioned in a document in 1473. The youngest village Osteraccum was first mentioned in 1497.

Church history

The cathedral scholaster of Bremen, Adam, reports from 1050 about churches in the coastal area. For Stedesdorf, too, there is evidence of an early church wood construction at this time. In the first half of the 12th century, however, a tuff stone church was built, which is considered the oldest church in the old Harlingerland . The broadcasting court met in Stedesdorf and the broadcasting rights were pronounced locally. As a sending church, the place had the function of a regional Ecclesia Matrix (mother church) and exercised ecclesiastical influence on the neighboring villages. Esens, Thunum, Burhafe, Dunum, Werdum, Fulkum, Buttforde, Westerbur and other places were ecclesiastically subordinate to Stedesdorf. Thus, Stedesdorf was the largest Sendkirchen district in the northern diocese of Bremen (1420).

The vast majority of the residents of Stedesdorf belong to the Evangelical Lutheran parish of Stedesdorf - Thunum . The Roman Catholic and Evangelical Free Church Christians receive pastoral care from their churches in Esens .

Municipal council

The council of the municipality of Stedesdorf consists of eleven council women and councilors. This is the specified number for the member municipality of a joint municipality with a population of 1001 to 2000 inhabitants. The eleven council members are elected by local elections for five years each. The current term of office began on November 1, 2016 and ends on October 31, 2021.

The turnout in the 2016 local elections was 69.25%, well above the Lower Saxony average of 55.5%. For comparison - in the previous local election on September 11, 2011, the turnout was 65.58%.

At the constituent meeting, the SPD and the voter community “Bürgerwille” joined forces to form a group. The council elected council member Ilse Reineke as honorary mayor for the current electoral term.

Blazon : In blue a red-tongued golden lion holding four golden ears of corn in its paws. The lion is taken from the coat of arms of Chief Wibet von Stedesdorf . The ears of corn stand for the four districts of Mamburg, Osteraccum, Thunum and Stedesdorf.

Buildings

St. Aegidien Church, seen from the south

The St. Aegidien Church in Stedesdorf was built between 1100 and 1150 as the sending church of the former Archdiocese of Bremen . Your layout type is unique in East Frisia. The compact nave is closed off by a recessed and almost square choir area. The brick-built bell tower of the closed type stands free and dates from 1695. On the north side of the free-standing bell tower is the Rillenstein von Stedesdorf .

The Stedesdorf station was on the north-sand railway line . The trains now pass the place without stopping.
