Stefan Barczay

Stefan Barczay (born February 23, 1911 ; † May 27, 1947 in the Landsberg War Crimes Prison ), a Czechoslovak SS storm man , had been a member of the Waffen SS since March 1943 and was a member of the 1st guard at Mauthausen concentration camp .

Between May 1943 and October 1944 and from December 1944 to May 1945 he worked as a security guard in the lower camps of the Mauthausen Eisenerz , Redl-Zipf , Gusen and Linz III concentration camps .

After the end of the Second World War , Barczay was indicted by a US military court in the main Mauthausen trial , which took place as part of the Dachau trials . He was accused of beating a French prisoner with a rifle butt in Redl-Zipf in March 1944. In autumn 1944 he is said to have shot a Jewish prisoner in Gusen. In addition, there were records in Gusen's death book that Barczay had shot one prisoner on August 11, 1943 and four prisoners on September 19, 1944. The accused admitted killing a Russian prisoner trying to escape, but denied any further shootings.

The court sentenced Barczay to death by hanging . The sentence was carried out on May 27, 1947 in the Landsberg War Crimes Prison.
