Stefan Rebenich

Stefan Rebenich (born April 7, 1961 in Jugenheim ) is a German ancient historian .

From 1980 to 1985 Stefan Rebenich studied Classical Philology and History at the University of Mannheim and Ancient History at the University of Oxford . In 1990 he became with the work Hieronymus und seine Kreis. PhD in prosopographical and socio-historical studies at the University of Mannheim. It was there that he completed his habilitation on Theodor Mommsen and Adolf Harnack in 1995 . Science and politics in Berlin at the end of the 19th century. With an appendix: edition and commentary on the correspondence . From 1997 to 2003 Rebenich was a university lecturer (from 2002, an adjunct professor) at the University of Mannheim. In 2003 he passed the second state examination for higher education at grammar schools. In the 1997/1998 winter semester, Rebenich held a chair at Bielefeld University , and in the 2000/2001 winter semester at Munich University . On October 1, 2003, Rebenich became Professor of Ancient History at Bielefeld University. In 2006 he moved to a chair for ancient history and the history of the reception of antiquity up to the 20th century at the University of Bern .

His main research interests are late antiquity and the history of science. In addition, Rebenich works on the history of Sparta , Christianity in the Roman Empire and ancient social, cultural and religious history. Rebenich also analyzed the development of ancient history in the Weimar Republic , National Socialism and the early Federal Republic. Rebenich is a full member of the German Archaeological Institute and sat on the advisory board of the Commission for Ancient History and Epigraphy .
