Geographical location

The community is located at the junction of natural areas Westerzgebirge and Vogtland in the Erzgebirge / Vogtland . The eponymous Steinberg ( 659  m above sea level ) is located in the center between the three districts. Most of Rothenkirchen lies in the upper valley of the Rödelbach , a tributary of the Zwickauer Mulde . The Plohnbach , a tributary of the Göltzsch, flows through Wildenau . The Wernesbach , which also flows into the Göltzsch, flows through Wernesgrün .

Memorials

A tomb with a memorial plaque on the cemetery of the local part Wernesgrün reminiscent of four unknown concentration camp prisoners , the case of a death march from the central warehouse in Lengenfeld (Vogtland) of the Flossenburg concentration camp in the spring of 1945 by SS men were killed.

There is also a memorial in the Wernesgrün district that commemorates the local engineer Johann Andreas Schubert .

At today's town hall in Rothenkirchen, where the former train station with a historical station clock is also located, a trolley and a buffer stop reminds of the former Wilkau-Haßlau-Carlsfeld (WCd) narrow-gauge railway .

The mayor Andreas Gruner was elected in June 2015. He is the successor to Günther Pührer.

Local partnerships

Steinberg maintains partnerships with Hünfeld in Hesse and Simontornya in Hungary. Another partnership is currently being sought.

Culture and sights

The main attraction and the eponymous geographical center of the municipality is the Steinberg with a height of 659 meters. In addition to the 17.5 meter high observation tower, there is also a restaurant there.

The churches in the individual districts are particularly worth seeing.

The Vogtland Panorama Weg runs through the community. In 2005 it was the first east German hiking trail to be awarded the “Quality Trail Wanderable Germany” seal of approval by the German Hiking Association and was able to defend its certification in 2008.

Sports

In the individual districts there is a soccer club with SV Londa Rothenkirchen, SV Grün-Weiss Wernesgrün and SV 08 Wildenau and there is a rifle club in Rothenkirchen.

The federal highway 169 leads through the districts of Wernesgrün and Rothenkirchen . Until the 1970s, Rothenkirchen had a connection to the 750 mm narrow-gauge railway Wilkau-Haßlau-Carlsfeld .

  • The district of Wernesgrün is the seat of the Wernesgrüner brewery .
  • Until shortly after the war, Rothenkirchen was the headquarters of the hair care manufacturer Wella . Today there is a factory of the Wella subsidiary Londa in Rothenkirchen. Wella itself is a subsidiary of Procter & Gamble .
  • The Zahořanský AG with the Zahořanský GmbH mold and tool has an office in Rothenkirchen.
  • One of the oldest businesses in the town, which is still family-owned today, is the Ebert blacksmith's shop, which has existed since 1837 and is now a regionally known metal construction company.
  • Furthermore, the production buildings of the company Beeren-, Wild-, Feinfrucht GmbH are located in the district of Rothenkirchen, for short "BWF", which can look back on a long tradition.
  • EHG pipe production, which produces stainless steel pipes, is also located in the Rothenkirchen district.
