The Steirischer Herbst ( proper spelling : steirischer herbst ) is an international festival for contemporary art that takes place annually in September / October in Styria . It was founded in 1968 by Hanns Koren and is said to be the oldest festival for “new” art in Europe.

Central features of steirischer herbst are on the one hand the networking of the various art disciplines (theater, visual arts, film, literature, dance, music, architecture, performance, new media and theory), hence the designation as a multi-discipline or all-discipline festival, and on the other hand Self-image as a “producing festival” (“original” works, world premieres and commissioned works).

Steirischer herbst has been part of the NXTSTP cultural network funded by the European Union since 2007 .

Artistic director / artistic director

In the first few years steirischer herbst was headed by committees (program board of trustees, board of directors) made up of the most important protagonists of Styrian cultural life. From 1983 directors were appointed who were responsible for the program:

Highlights

In 1969 Gerald Szyszkowitz first staged the text “To the beautiful view” by the writer Ödön von Horváth . For steirischer herbst 1983, Nobel Prize winner Samuel Beckett wrote “Was Wo”, the only commissioned work of his life.

2003 was - in terms of awards and audience numbers - the most successful year of the festival: Beat Furrer's music theater “Begehren” was the world premiere of the year, Klaus Händl for his play “wilde. the man with the sad eyes ”was elected young dramatist of the year, a total of over 130,000 visitors visited the festival productions.

With “Truth is Concrete”, a “24/7 marathon camp on artistic strategies in politics and political strategies in art” was opened in 2012, which was attended by around 250 artists, activists and scientists in the Thalia bar in Graz for a week gathered. With a total time of 170 hours, this is the longest program in the history of the festival.

In 2016, the first stage work by the Thai film director Apichatpong Weerasethakul , “Fever Room”, celebrated its premiere in German-speaking countries as part of steirischer herbst. The news magazine Der Spiegel subsequently rated the piece as “one of the most incredible stage works of our time”.

In 2017 steirischer herbst took place for the 50th time. The highlights of the anniversary year included the first film adaptation of Elfriede Jelinek's novel “ Die Kinder der Toten ” at original locations in and around Neuberg an der Mürz as well as “Bacchae - Prelude to a Purge” by, described as one of the “most brilliant works of contemporary choreography” Choreographer Marlene Monteiro Freitas. In addition, the festival archive was digitized and thus made accessible to the public, as was an anniversary exhibition at the GrazMuseum . In the first 50 years of the festival, more than three million people attended steirischer herbst performances.

Institutions involved

The Forum Stadtpark , the Jugendmusikfest Deutschlandsberg and the Styrian Academy were involved in founding the festival . The ORF brought its musikprotokoll (a series of contemporary music) into the festival. The Graz Opera , the Schauspielhaus Graz and the Neue Galerie Graz were also involved from the start. In the course of the festival's history there have been collaborations with the Kunsthaus Graz , Medienturm , Camera Austria , pool, Theater im Bahnhof , Literaturhaus Graz , manuscripts , typists , Kulturzentrum Wolkenstein , kunsthaus muerz ( Mürzzuschlag ), KULM ( Pischelsdorf ), Pavelhaus .

Venues

Except in the years 2003 to 2005 with the Helmut-List-Halle - in which steirischer herbst was opened a total of 13 times - steirischer herbst did not and does not have its own venue and was therefore forced to find and adapt rooms in Styria . The consequence is productions in abandoned industrial halls, swimming pools, tunnel systems, bridges, shop window areas and often in public spaces (all works of art in Graz public space can be found on the OFFSITE_GRAZ website).

In addition, since the mid-1990s, the festival has regularly opened "Herbst Bars" at various locations in Graz; under the direction of Veronica Kaup-Hasler , festival centers were also promoted as central venues. The “House of Open Gates” project, initiated in 2016 as such a center, was subsequently awarded the Outstanding Artist Award from the Austrian Federal Chancellery . For the 50th anniversary of steirischer herbst 2017, the Palais Attems in Graz - which has housed the festival's offices and archive since 1985 - was converted into the festival center.

Scandals

Steirischer herbst is often associated with the term “ scandal ”: in 1968, on the second day of the festival's history, the discussion “Biennale, Documenta and the situation of art of our time” in Graz Castle Eggenberg was prematurely interrupted due to protests. In 1975 the play "Ghosts" by Wolfgang Bauer, broadcast in the main evening program of the ORF , provoked as fierce discussions as Werner Schwab's plays 20 years later .

The world premiere of the jazz oratorio “The Holy Grail of Jazz and Joy” by George Gruntz, based on texts by Alfred Lord Tennyson, took place in 1985 without an audience: conservationists protested against the performance and expressed concern about the ecology of the performance location - the Lurgrotte .

On the 50th anniversary of the "Anschluss" to Hitler Germany, Werner Fenz had places in Graz that were exposed during National Socialism, artistically designed under the title "Reference points 38/88". Work by IRWIN and Bill Fontana caused aggression and discussion, and Hans Haackes “Victory Column” even fell victim to an arson attack. 1998 saw Christoph Schlingensief with his Sandler - Pole-Sitting contest "Chance 2000 Graz," which a few years later at the Venice Biennale was repeated for arousal.
