(Under) mast , above Marsstenge (red) and above Bramstenge

A stanchion forms the extension of the mast above the first spreader on a sailing boat or sailing ship . It is part of the rigging and can consist of a metal tube or, earlier, of solid round wood. The lower part from the deck to the first spreader is called the (under) mast (jib, main, cross (under) mast etc.) The stern is at the same angle to the deck as the mast, which it usually overlaps at the front. Both can be mounted vertically or inclined aft. The lower spar is related to the sailing names the topmast , it follows the topgallant , and tall ships often Royalstenge , in some cases even the Skystenge.
