Stephanos I. Sidarouss

Stephanos I. Cardinal Sidarouss CM (born February 22, 1904 in Cairo , Egypt ; † August 23, 1987 there ) was Patriarch of Alexandria of the Coptic Catholic Church and Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life and Church Career

Early Years and Priesthood

Stephanos entered the religious community of the Lazarists and lived in France , where he began his studies . He received the ordination of priests on July 22nd, 1939 in the cathedral of Dax - Dax is the birthplace of the founder of the order of the Lazarists Vincent von Paul . From 1939 to 1946 he was a student in the religious seminary in Évreux and took part in scholastic classes in Dax and in Montmagny (Val-d'Oise) . From 1946 to 1947 he was director of the Institute for the Coptic Catholic Church in Tantah (Egypt).

Episcopate and Patriarch of Alexandria

On August 9, 1947, he was appointed titular bishop of Sais and was appointed auxiliary bishop in Alexandria . He was ordained bishop on January 25, 1948 by Patriarch Markos II. Khouzam , co-consecrators were Alexandros Scandar , Bishop of Assiut , and Pietro Dib , Maronite Bishop of Cairo .

On May 10, 1958, Stephanos Sidarouss was elected Coptic Catholic Patriarch of Alexandria . On February 22, 1965 he was by Pope Paul VI. elevated to Cardinal and received on February 25, the Cardinal insignia .

During his tenure he took part in the four sessions of the Second Vatican Council and in 1978 was a participant in two conclaves , namely for the election of Pope John Paul I and Pope John Paul II. During the Synod of Bishops of the Coptic Catholic Church in 1971, he represented the maintenance of celibacy for the Coptic priests .

He was the main consecrator of Bishop Youhanna Kabes (Auxiliary Bishop in Alexandria), Bishop Stephanos II. Ghattas CM (his later successor), Bishop Athanasios Abadir (Auxiliary Bishop in Alexandria), Bishop Antonios Naguib (now Patriarch of Alexandria), Bishop Yousannés Malak (Auxiliary Bishop in Luxor ) and Bishop Aghnatios Elias Yaacoub SJ (Bishop of Luxor). As a co-consecrator, he participated in the episcopal ordinations of Archbishop Isaac Ghattas (Bishop of Luxor), Archbishop Paul Nousseir (Bishop of Minya ) and Bishop Youhanna Nueir OFM (Auxiliary Bishop in Luxor).

For reasons of age, he retired on May 24, 1986 with papal permission and was Patriarch Emeritus of Alexandria until his death on August 23, 1987 .
