Stephen Schwartz (* 6. March 1948 in New York City ) is an American musical - composer and - author .

Life

Stephen Schwartz studied piano and composition at the Juilliard School of Music and graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with a degree in drama in 1968 .

He began working as a producer for RCA Records in New York, but soon devoted himself to working on the Broadway stages . His first success was the theme song for the play Butterflies Are Free , which was also used in the film version .

In 1971 he wrote the music and new lyrics for the musical Godspell , for which he received numerous awards, including two Grammys . In the following years he wrote the English texts for Bernstein's Mass together with Leonard Bernstein .

Other musical shows include Pippin , The Magic Show and The Baker's Wife .

After several other projects, Schwartz wrote music and lyrics for the successful musical Children of Eden in 1991 . He then started working as a film composer for Disney productions, where he and Alan Menken wrote the score for the cartoon Pocahontas (for which he received 2 Oscars ) and The Hunchback of Notre Dame . He also contributed some songs to The Prince of Egypt , for the song When You Believe he received another Oscar.

In 2003 Schwartz returned to Broadway and produced the musical Wicked there , based on Gregory Maguire's novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West . Schwartz received a Grammy Award for his work as a composer / lyricist and producer on the resulting album.

In April 2008, Schwartz was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame . Schwartz has been married to Carole Piasecki since 1969 and has two children.
