Stephen "Steve" Clarke , (born August 29, 1963 in Saltcoats , Scotland ) is a former Scottish football player and current coach . In May 2019 he took over the coaching position for the Scottish national football team .
Club career
Clarke, who was a fan of Celtic Glasgow as a young boy , played for Beith Juniors in 1980 . His professional career then began at FC St. Mirren before moving to Chelsea in February 1987. The defender played more than 400 games for the Londoners until 1998, scoring ten goals. In 1994 he was named Chelsea Player of the Year . He won the FA Cup with Chelsea in 1997 , the League Cup in 1998 and - in his last game for the Blues with a 1-0 win over VfB Stuttgart - the European Cup Winners' Cup . In 2005, Clarke was elected to Chelsea's eleven of the century.
National team
Clarke played six games for Scotland . He made his debut for the Tartan Army under coach Andy Roxburgh on September 9, 1987 in Hampden Park in a 2-0 win against Hungary . 1987/88 followed four more appearances in blue dress, including two qualifying games for the European Championship . His comeback game under coach Craig Brown six years later was lost on May 27, 1994 in Utrecht against the Netherlands 1: 3. It was also Clarke's last assignment for Scotland.
Coaching career
After his playing days, Clarke followed his coach Ruud Gullit as assistant coach to Newcastle United in the 1998/99 season . When Gullit left the Magpies , Clarke was Newcastle's interim coach for one game in 1999. When Bobby Robson took over the office, he remained his assistant until 2000. He then returned to Chelsea as a scout . He then worked for a while as a youth coach at Stamford Bridge before he became co- coach of manager José Mourinho in the summer of 2004 . After his departure, Clarke was named in charge of the first team on September 20, 2007, along with Avraham Grant, the summer sports director . After Grant's release in May 2008, Luiz Felipe Scolari was appointed coach, with Clarke back as an assistant coach. Since January 10, 2011, Clarke worked as a co-trainer for Kenny Dalglish at Liverpool FC .
On June 8, 2012, the English first division West Bromwich Albion announced the commitment of Clarke as the new head coach. After West Brom finished the Premier League 2012/13 in good eighth place, Clarke was dismissed in the following season after four defeats in a row and table position 16 on December 14, 2013.
After a year without coaching, the English second list FC Reading announced the signing of Clarke as the new head coach on December 16, 2014 . Clarke was released in December 2015.
In October 2017 he became the coach of FC Kilmarnock . After finishing fifth in the 2017/18 season and third in 2018/19 , he succeeded Alex McLeish as coach of the national team. He received a three-year contract.
