Steven Tetsuo Kariya (born December 22, 1977 in North Vancouver , British Columbia ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player .
Career
Steve Kariya played college hockey for the Maine Black Bears , the University of Maine sports team , with whom he won the National Collegiate Athletic Association championship in the 1998/99 season . After the season, the undrafted free agent closed his first professional contract with the Vancouver Canucks from the National Hockey League . He is thus one of the few players who did not make the leap into the top division via the NHL Entry Draft , but were signed directly by a team.
His career with the Canucks was very bumpy, in almost four years he came to only 65 appearances in the NHL, the rest of the time he played mostly with the various farm teams of the franchise . Above all, his inconsistent defensive behavior was criticized. On January 24, 2003, the attacker was transferred to the New York Islanders in exchange for Mikko Jokela . There he did not play a single game, but ran for the Islanders' farm team, the Albany River Rats from the American Hockey League .
With the expiry of his contract and the looming lockout of the 2004/05 NHL season , Kariya decided to continue his career in Europe. In his first year with Ilves Tampere in the Finnish SM-liiga he showed very good performances and at the end of the season he received the Veli-Pekka-Ketola trophy , which is awarded to the top scorer of the league. After another year in Finland, with the Espoo Blues , the fast winger moved to the Swedish Elitserien for Frölunda HC . The Gothenburg club were reigning champions at the time and Kariya hoped to finally win his first professional title with them.
Success failed to materialize, however, and so he moved back to the Finnish league after only two seasons and signed a contract with HPK Hämeenlinna , for which he played for one season before moving to JYP Jyväskylä within the league . With his new club, Kariya took third place at the end of the 2010 SM liiga play-offs . Then he ended his career.
