The Ibbenbüren branch canal (SKI) is a remnant of an old journey of the Mittelland Canal , which was replaced by a new one in the mid-1980s. It is located in the west of the city of Ibbenbüren in the Uffeln district in the Tecklenburger Land and, as a federal waterway of waterway class IV, belongs to the Mittelland Canal, from which it branches off at kilometer 3.94. The newly created waterways and shipping office Mittellandkanal / Elbe-Seitenkanal (previously the waterways and shipping office Minden) has been responsible since February 5, 2020 .

End of the branch canal on the railway line

From 1985 to 1987 the Mittelland Canal was expanded, also between the port in Uffeln and the bridge over the A30 motorway further south. In this area, the route was changed for two reasons: On the one hand, the two arches within this section no longer corresponded to the radii that are intended for modern shipping. During the expansion, the canal would have had to be extremely widened in order to achieve the usual radii of around 2000 m. On the other hand, the culvert over the Ibbenbürener Aa was a repeated target of British bomber groups during World War II , so that a large number of duds was suspected in this area.

Thus, a new drive a few hundred meters further west was built, the exact name of which is "Hörstel piercing". After completion, the old drive was partially backfilled; other parts serve as a lake and recreational area. The last section of 1.11 km in length from the port in Uffeln in a southerly direction to the Löhne – Rheine railway line is still accessible to shipping and is known as the Ibbenbüren branch canal. There is also a loading facility and a small marina on it.
