Stimela (German: steam locomotive) is a South African Mbaqanga group founded by Ray Phiri in 1982 . It became the most successful band in the country. All albums achieved gold or even platinum status.

In the mid-1980s, Paul Simon heard Stimela recordings and invited the band to the 1986 sessions for his upcoming Graceland project, which helped the Mbaqanga sound to become internationally known. In November 1986, the hit Whispers in the Deep was removed from radio and television programs by the censors .

Stimela won several South African Music Awards , most recently two SAMA Awards in 2011. Frontman Ray Phiri died in 2017 .
