Stormont Castle

Stormont Castle is a mansion on the Stormont Estate in the eastern urban area of Belfast in the Northern Irish county of Belfast. It served as the main meeting place for the Concordance Democratic Northern Ireland Executive . Stormont Castle was never a proper castle or chateau. The original building from the 1830s was remodeled in 1858 by its owners, the Cleland family , in the Scottish Baronial style . B. had decorative crowd watch towers built.

From 1921 to 1972 Stormont Castle was the official residence of the Prime Minister of Northern Ireland . However, some Prime Ministers preferred to live in Stormont House , the official residence of the Speaker of Parliament for Northern Ireland, which was vacant because some speakers preferred to live in their own homes. During the same period, the house also housed the Cabinet Room of the Government of Northern Ireland.

Before the handover of administration, the house served as the headquarters of the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland , the Ministers of the Northern Ireland Office and their officials in Belfast. It was also used for MI5 officials during the Northern Ireland conflict .

The Northern Ireland Assembly meets in the neighboring Parliament Buildings , which are often equated with Stormont and incorrectly referred to as Stormont Castle.
