The Ouargla tram is the tram in the Algerian city of Ouargla , which has a population of almost 200,000 . The fifth tram company in Algeria went into operation on March 20, 2018. A short horse-drawn tram existed in the old town until 1960 .
The only line T1 runs from the Cité Administrative via the city center to Hai Nasr New Town. It is 9.7 km long and includes 16 stations and a depot . The operator is EMA (Entreprise Métro d'Alger). It has acquired 23 Citadis low-floor trams from Cital, a joint venture in which it, the Spanish construction company Ferrovial and the French rail vehicle manufacturer Alstom have a stake . The first Cital 402 railcar - identical in structure to the Citadis 402 - was delivered to Ouargla in December 2016.
The construction of the line was entrusted to Alstom and Cital. Alstom is responsible for the electrical systems including the substations, the signaling and telecommunication system, the ticket system, the equipment for maintenance and assistance with operations.

The 23 seven-part vehicles, which are basically identical to the Citadis 402, are almost 44 m long and can carry more than 400 passengers. Deviating from the Citadis standard, in view of the high temperatures, they were given a more powerful air conditioning system and, due to the intense sunlight, coated windows. The drive and braking systems were sealed against the drifting sand - Ouargla is located at a source oasis in the Sahara - the joints, shock absorbers and pantograph are also specially protected here.
The trains are designed by Alstom. Outwardly, they should be reminiscent of the colors of the sun and desert, the interior is inspired by the mildness and freshness of the palm groves.

The travel time between the end points is 34 minutes, with an average speed of 20.6 km / h. During rush hour, the trains run every five minutes. The expected transport performance is 3450 passengers per hour and up to 34 million people per year.
During the Islamic month of fasting Ramadan , the trains only run every twenty minutes. At the vehicles that are then parked there are free meals for staff and passengers to break the fast .
Every evening the rails are freed from sand near dunes with a road - rail lorry ; after sandstorms , external companies are also used.
Others
Because of the open desert border with neighboring Mali, the authorities anticipate the risk of kidnappings and ransom extortion. When entering the city, visitors' passports are therefore confiscated and every visitor receives police protection.
