The Strahov Stadium ( Czech Velký strahovský stadion , Stadion Strahov or Strahovský stadion ) is a sports stadium in the Strahov district of the Czech capital Prague . It was used in the past for gymnastics and other mass events and is said to have held between 220,000 and 250,000 spectators at its peak, making it the largest stadium of all time.

At present, the Strahov Stadium, which houses several football fields, is used by the Sparta Prague football club as an office and training facility. In theory, the dilapidated stadium can still hold 56,000 spectators today.

The stadium is located on the west side of the Petřín . It can be reached by the Petřín funicular that goes up the mountain from the Lesser Town , as well as by several bus routes . In the immediate vicinity are the Evžena Rošického stadium , the venue for Slavia Prague from 2000 to 2008 , other stadiums and the former Spartakiadeorf, which is now used as a student settlement.

history

Sokolfest in the stadium in 1932

The plans for the stadium were made in 1926 by the architect Alois Dryák . The first stadium was built with wooden grandstands, but these were replaced by concrete grandstands in 1932. Further expansion work took place in 1948 and 1975. The playing field is surrounded on all sides by grandstands, has no running track and has an area of approx. 70,000  , i.e. around 206 m × 340 m.

During the time of the First Czechoslovak Republic from 1918 to 1938 and in 1948, gymnastics events of the Sokol gymnastics movement and later in the ČSSR Spartakiaden with up to 10,000 gymnasts and other mass events took place in the Strahov Stadium . It was also the venue for some rock concerts . Bands like U2 , the Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd played here in front of over 150,000 spectators.

Current condition

Today, the Sparta Prague office and a training center with eight football fields (six standard-size fields and two smaller fields) are located in the interior of the stadium . Home games are also played here by Sparta's second team and youth teams. In the 2000s, various studies considered the possible reuse and preservation of this unique structure. In July 2010 the stadium was used as the venue for the World Ultimate Club Championship (WUCC 2010).

The stadium's stands are only partially used and in some places are in a poor structural condition. Due to the establishment of the office in the interior, use of the entire stadium is currently excluded. For security reasons, a maximum of 56,000 spectators are permitted from the city of Prague. In fact, however, no more than a few hundred spectators attend the youth games in the stadium.
