Stralsund Gate
The Stralsund Gate in Grimmen is one of the three remaining gates of the fortifications that surrounded the city. It is also called the "Sundian Gate". The six-storey, 25.2 meter high brick gate was built around 1320/30 on a field stone base and secured the road to Stralsund . It was extensively decorated on the land side with a glazed tracery frieze and several German ribbons. On the city side, it is much simpler. Almost all openings were walled up. The five striking plaster panels and the around five-meter-wide battlement at the gate are striking. The steep gable roof is bordered by staggered gable decorated with blinds , which the gate received in the 15th century.
After being used as a defensive gate, it became the apartment of the court servant in 1813 and was partially used as a prison until 1850. In 1910 a lightning strike damaged the gate, but it was restored in every detail. Extensive restoration work was carried out in 1978 and 1991.
