The Strandbahn Warnemünde – Markgrafenheide was a small electric train that connected Warnemünde with Markgrafenheide . The railway owes its name to the fact that it ran along the Baltic Sea for most of the route directly behind the dunes. In Warnemünde, the terminus with the car shed was in the Hohe Düne district on the east bank of the Warnow (Neuer Strom) and could be reached from the train station by ferry. The route led from the Hohe Düne, where the only turnout was, parallel to the coast and then turned south to the end point at the forester's house Markgrafenheide. There the route ended immediately before the bridge over the moat. The terminus was the starting point for hiking trails in the Rostock Heath , such as Hinrichshagen and the Schnatermann forestry lodge .

The 4.7 kilometer long meter gauge railway was owned by the city of Rostock and was opened as a small railway on July 1, 1910. It was administered by the Rostock municipal gas and waterworks and was not part of the Rostocker Straßenbahn AG . The 1940 Public Transport Handbook lists three railcars and five trailer cars ; before 1925 there were two railcars and four sidecars, which were typical tram vehicles .

In 1914, the timetable only provided for hourly trips in summer, which could be condensed into half-hourly intervals in the afternoon if necessary; A twenty-minute cycle is said to have been offered in 1928 and year-round operation was introduced a few years later. The travel time was given as 12 minutes in 1914 and 18 minutes in 1927.

Immediately before the Red Army marched into Rostock and Warnemünde, operations ended on the morning of May 1, 1945. It was not resumed later. The tracks were used to build the tram route from Rostock city center to Dierkow and Gehlsdorf . The rolling stock also came to the Rostock tram.
