The student fountain in Bonn was built in 1913 and is a symbol of historical student culture in the city. The fountain on the corner of Franziskanerstraße and An der Schloßkirche was listed as a historical monument in 1988.

In 1913, the sculptor Carl Burger created a fountain for the Schlosskirchenhof, the reliefs of which deal with the student culture of the 19th century. The four large representations on the fountain column show the four faculties : theology, philosophy, law and medicine. Among them are the coats of arms of the university, the city of Bonn, the Rhine Province and the German Empire .

The eight reliefs on the outer wall of the octagonal fountain trough show scenes from student life. This is how student fencing (“Auf der Mensur”) and excessive drinking (“Die Lindenwirtin ”) are presented. Another relief also relates to the consumption of alcohol: a student sits slumped at the pub table, the relief is labeled “Zu Askalon”, with which the artist refers to the student song Im Schwarzen Walfisch zu Askalon . The column also bears the inscription “ Gaudeamus igitur juvenes dum sumus ” (German translation: We want to be happy while we are still young ). The bronze figure of a student that originally stood on the column no longer exists.

During the Second World War , the well was damaged in bombing raids. After restoration and reconstruction by the firm C. Meisen , the rector of Bonn University , Kurt Fleischhauer (* 1929), returned the fountain to its intended use on October 19, 1985. It is roughly in the same place as it was before it was stored after the war.
