Studium Biblicum Franciscanum
The Studium Biblicum Franciscanum (SBF) is a center for biblical and archaeological research and studies based in Jerusalem .
History and organization
The Studium Biblicum Franciscanum was planned by the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land since 1901 . It was founded in 1924 as a center for biblical and archaeological research and studies, from which a university developed with the teaching and research focus on biblical studies and Christian archeology . The Studium Biblicum Franciscanum has its headquarters in the convent of the Franciscans, the flagellation monastery on the Via Dolorosa .
Since 2001 the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum has been a faculty for biblical sciences and archeology of the Pontifical University Antonianum , the religious college of the Franciscans in Rome.
The Studium Biblicum Franciscanum is the editor of several scientific publications. Scientific articles appear in various languages in the theological-archaeological journal Liber Annuus ; the editorial is Italian. The following series are also published: "Collectio Maior", "Collectio Minor", "Analecta" and "Museum".
Branch in China
In 1945 Gabriele Allegra OFM (1907–1976) founded a branch in Beijing , which was relocated to Hong Kong in 1948 . In 1987 the Hong Kong Catholic Biblical Institute was established. Gabriele Allegra published the first edition of the Bible in Chinese from 1935 to 1968 - together with the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum as editor - which is known as the "Chinese Bible" in China.
Teaching and Research
The study options focus on two courses: the licentiate and the doctorate in biblical sciences and archeology. A diploma in biblical-oriental sciences and a biblical diploma are also offered. In addition, since 1982 basic philosophical and theological studies have been possible via the “ Studium Theologicum Jerosolymitanum ”. The language of instruction is Italian.
Teaching and research areas are Old and New Testament exegesis, biblical and Christian history, biblical and oriental languages, and biblical archeology . Numerous excavations in the Holy Land are being supervised, such as in Bethanien , Betfage , Bethlehem , En Kerem , Emmaus (El-Qubeibe) , Herodion , Jerusalem ( Church of the Holy Sepulcher , Getsemani , Dominus Flevit ), Capernaum , Cana , Nazareth , Mount Nebo , Machaerus , Migdal (Magdala) , Tabgha and Mount Tabor . Important finds are accessible in a museum.
The Studium Biblicum Franciscanum library contains around 50,000 volumes and 420 journals in the fields of archeology, biblical studies, patristics, early Judaism, the ancient Middle East and ancient travelogues about the Holy Land.
