Stuga (Mz. Stugor ) is the Swedish term for a holiday home that serves as a temporary home on vacation or for leisure .

history

Many Swedish holiday homes have been inherited for generations; often at the beginning they were simple farms or cottages ("torp") owned and operated by previous generations. Since industrialization came to Sweden late, many of these small farms were in operation until the 1940s and 1950s and were then converted into holiday homes when the last permanent residents died.

However, industrialization also meant a desire from the metropolitan population for more outdoor activities. In the years 1915–1920 this was the start of a movement for the so-called sportstuga (sports house). The sportstuga was located near the cities, mainly around Stockholm and Gothenburg , often as a small settlement and in connection with sports clubs. Here you could do sports in all seasons, alone or in groups. Many of these settlements are now inhabited all year round thanks to their more central location.

The typical stuga

A typical Swedish stuga is generally in the country and usually offers simple comfort .

The dream of their own stuga , the “little red house by the lake”, is deeply rooted in the Swedes. Foreign visitors are often surprised by the simple lifestyle in an otherwise highly technical country. But it should be easy here, with a wood-burning stove , water from the well and an outhouse behind the house. The term sommarstuga does not categorically mean that the stuga is only habitable in summer; many are used all year round, although the peak season falls between Easter and late September.

A vinterstuga does not exist. The word “stuga” can also be found in lekstuga (a playhouse), sjukstuga (simple hospital ward in the country) and campingstuga (small huts on campsites with bunk beds for 2–6 people and self- catering ). With the kolonistuga the allotment garden house is meant.

"In the countryside"

The expression “att åka till landet” (driving into the country) is synonymous with the trip to the stuga and is rarely associated with rest, relaxation and sitting still, but more with the fact that something has to be repaired or built. According to state statistics, there were around 680,000 holiday homes in Sweden in 2006. Of these, approx. 155,700 holiday homes were located in 1,319 holiday home areas. There were about 700,000 families with one or two children in Sweden in 2005; theoretically every Swedish family with children has access to a stuga .
