Suhlesturm

The Suhlesturm (formerly: Sulsturn or Sulis-Thurn) is a watch tower about two kilometers west of Mellrichstadt at about 375  m above sea level. NN in the Lower Franconian district of Rhön-Grabfeld .

Structure and history

The Suhlesturm is a 12 meter high round tower. From the outside 28 steps lead to the old entrance of the tower at a height of 5 meters. Inside, two ladders with a total of 23 rungs lead to the approximately 11 meter high platform. On the whole, it is similar to the other waiting towers in the Vorderen Rhön . Its specialty in the building is that its crown is adorned with arches, which makes it unique in the area.

A wooden predecessor from the 13th century also stood in front of the current building from the 15th century. At the beginning of the 20th century, the remains of a stone wall were found around the tower, which can only be partially recognized today. Recently, like many others, it has been restored and opened to the public. The all-round view includes large parts of the grave field and the surrounding mountain ranges such as the Rhön , Gleichberge and Haßberge .

Today, especially in the summertime, there are many youth parties. In addition to graduation ceremonies for several school classes, other festivals that have become tradition take place, which are a thorn in the side of farmers and local residents.
