Sulphite fuel is a by-product of pulp production using the sulphite process .

execution

The black liquor resulting from the sulphite process still contains monosaccharides in a concentration of around 2 to 2.5%. These sugars can be extracted from the black liquor and fermented into ethanol . The process of extracting sulphite fuel originated in Sweden. The first plants were built in Köpmanholmen and Skutskär Bruk in 1909. The sulphite process was dominant at the time and factories for the production of sulphite fuel were built near the sulphite processing plants.

In the past, the black liquor was often pumped directly into the water as waste. The waste pollution was somewhat reduced by the sulfite fuel plants, as part of the organic material was withdrawn in the form of ethanol. However, the factories were closed with the spread of the sulfate process , as this led to both better quality paper and a higher yield from wood, but did not throw off any fermentable sugar as a by-product. Sulphite liquor often contains a lot of impurities so it is only used as fuel and not for consumption.
