Summer in Paradise is the 29th studio album by the American music group The Beach Boys and dates back to 1992. Until That's Why God Made the Radio was released in 2012, it was the band's last studio album on which new material was released. The Beach Boys used their own record label Brother Records for the release in the USA . In Europe it was distributed by EMI . It was reported that the distributor who sold the album in the United States soon went into bankruptcy.

The album was produced by Terry Melcher . Only the song Forever was not produced by him, but by Garry Griffin, Lanny Cordula and John Stamos . Mike Love acted as executive producer .

Emergence

Little has been released since the 1989 album Still Cruisin ' as the Beach Boys lost their record deal. In 1991 Mike Love came up with the idea of creating a concept album about the early, typical beach boys themes such as summer, sun, beach, surfing and girls. Love wanted to create the "ultimate" summer album with this album.

Love and his musical partner Terry Melcher wrote six new songs for this purpose, which dealt with the topics mentioned. Furthermore, some texts were again strongly influenced by the teachings of Transcendental Meditation . Alongside them, covers of Hot Fun in the Summer Time , Under the Boardwalk and Remember Walking in the Sand were recorded. Bruce Johnston contributed the ballad Slow Summer Dancin ' . There were also two new entries from the Beach Boys catalog. These were Surfin and Forever , with John Stamos as the lead voice for the latter.

Recordings and participations

Melcher and Love were the driving forces behind the project who also directed the recording. Since Alan Jardine in particular had expressed himself critical of this project, Mike Love suspended him from the band during the recording. Even Carl Wilson was only sporadically represented in the recordings, also, did not take the musicians who went to the Beach Boys on tour closed in this project. Bruce Johnston was the only band member who contributed an instrument with the keyboard. The harmony chants are mostly by Mike Love, Terry Melcher, Bruce Johnston and Adrian Baker.

The rhythm section was completely recorded by producer Terry Melcher using a drum computer and keyboards.

Alan Jardine only took part in the project towards the end of the recording, but his collaboration was limited to just three songs.

publication

When the album was finished, Mike Love offered it to Capitol Records , which - like many other record companies - declined. So the Beach Boys released it on their own label, Brother Records . Summer in Paradise was selling poorly worldwide and was no longer available in stores after just a few weeks. Also appearances in the popular television series Baywatch and Full House , in which several songs were presented, could not increase the sales figures.

Since the album was selling very poorly in the USA (allegedly fewer than 1000 copies were sold in the USA), Terry Melcher mixed five new tracks and used them in the European version. Melcher also wanted to release a remixed single from Under the Boardwalk . The collaboration with him was terminated before that, however, because the band saw in him the person responsible for the failure.

The album Summer in Paradise did not even make it into the charts in the USA as the first Beach Boys album. The only known chart listing was number 37 in Switzerland . The album stayed in the top 40 there for two weeks.

After only a few copies of the album were sold and it was no longer reproduced after the first edition, it has been a collector's item for years.
