As Superbikes are street motorcycles with an engine capacity referred cc from about 1000 to the 1200th They are fully disguised and are more like racing machines than road machines in terms of performance and ride comfort. The term superbikes was coined in the late 1980s when the FIM Superbike World Championship for near-production motorcycles was introduced.

With "Superbike steering" a conversion is called a straight handlebar, which is used instead of the most used clip-ons to fully faired sports bikes. The goal is an upright and therefore more comfortable ride. Often the upper triple clamp, the throttle cables as well as the brake and clutch hoses have to be changed, and care must be taken that the handlebars do not collide with the fairing.

history

The BSA Rocket 3 / Triumph Trident and Honda CB750 Four , which were introduced at the end of the 1960s, are considered to be the first superbikes in history .

With the Kawasaki Z1 , which was built from 1971, the Superbike class then made its breakthrough. The Z1, with its 900-cm³- DOHC - line four-cylinder sold so well that by the end of the decade all other Japanese manufacturers took over the Z1 formula and manufactured its own, large-displacement four-cylinder engines. The resulting "arms race" of the Japanese led in the following years to high investments in modern production facilities and thus caused the extensive decline of motorcycle construction in Europe.

Today, alongside the big four Japanese manufacturers Honda , Kawasaki , Suzuki and Yamaha , the Italian plants Aprilia , Bimota , Ducati and MV Agusta as well as the Austrian manufacturer KTM and BMW from Germany are among the manufacturers of superbikes.

Racing

Superbikes are becoming increasingly popular in racing in general. The technical regulations, which allow only minor deviations from the series machines that serve as the basis, enable cost-effective racing and at the same time lead to a high level of performance.

After the introduction of the Superbike World Championship in 1988 , Superbike races quickly gained a large fan base. The world championship is now, after the MotoGP class, the second premier class of motorcycle racing.

The near-series four - stroke machines gradually replaced the 500 cm³ two-stroke machines in many national championships in the 1990s . There are now national Superbike championships in many countries, the best-known representatives being the British Superbike Championship in Great Britain , the American AMA Superbike Championship , the German IDM Superbike and the JSB1000 class of the Japanese All Japan Road Race Championship .
