Susan Davenny-Wyner

Susan Davenny-Wyner (born October 17, 1943 in New Haven / Connecticut ) is an American singer (soprano) and conductor.

The daughter of the pianist Ward Davenny first took violin and viola lessons . She attended the Cleveland Institute of Music and the Hartford School of Music, and studied English literature and music at Cornell University in 1965 . In 1967 she married the composer and pianist Yehudi Wyner .

From 1969 to 1975 she took singing lessons with Herta Glaz . She first appeared as a soloist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1974, first appeared on the opera stage in 1977 in a performance of Claudio Monteverdi's L'incoronazione di Poppea at the New York City Opera, and made her debut in 1981 as Woglinde in Richard Wagner's Rheingold at the Metropolitan Opera . In the following years she performed with internationally renowned orchestras under the direction of conductors such as Leonard Bernstein , Sir Colin Davis , Erich Leinsdorf , André Previn , Lorin Maazel , Seiji Ozawa , Robert Shaw and Michael Tilson Thomas .

At the same time she studied conducting at Yale University and Columbia University and conducted several orchestras from conservatories and universities. After she had to give up her singing career after a traffic accident in 1981, she concentrated entirely on conducting. She conducted the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra , the Boston Lyric Opera Orchestra and an orchestra made up of members of the Cleveland Orchestra in performances with soloists such as André Previn , Lynn Harrell , Peter Serkin , Emanuel Ax , Richard Stoltzman , Dominique Labelle , Eliot Fisk and Robert D. Levin . In 1999 she became musical director and conductor of the New England String Ensemble (until 2005) and the Warren Philharmonic Orchestra, and since 2007 she has also been musical director and conductor of the Boston Midsummer Opera.
