The Sutjeska ( Serbian - Cyrillic Сутјеска ) is a 33 kilometers long left tributary of the Drina in the east of Bosnia and Herzegovina .

course

The mountain river arises from numerous small source streams in the Čemerno basin in the border area with Montenegro on the territory of the municipality of Gacko . The headwaters are located directly below the Volujak ( 2336  m ) and not far from the Maglić mountain ( 2386  m ), the highest point in Bosnia-Herzegovina. The river initially flows northwest for five kilometers and then turns north. Here the Sutjeska forms a very narrow gorge in places, which is also used by the M20 trunk road ( Trebinje - Foča ). The narrowest point is called Vratar ("gatekeeper"). Most of the gorge, which separates the Maglić massif from the Zelengora in the west, which is also over 2000 m high , is part of the Sutjeska National Park .

At the exit of the gorge, where the Sutjeska valley widens, is the place Tjentište (Foča municipality), which is mainly known for its monument complex for the Battle of Sutjeska in spring 1943.

At the hamlet of Popov Most, the road leaves the valley of the river, which here turns to the east and finally flows into the Drina at Bastasi.

The Sutjeska has no major tributaries. One of the better-known mountain streams that flow into the river is the Perućica, which comes from the primeval forest of the same name on Maglić east of the Sutjeska and after which the Perućica reserve as the core zone of the Sutjeska National Park is named. The river is largely natural and is not dammed at any point. The catchment area is only sparsely populated.
