The Sveavägen is a running from north to south main road in the Stockholm districts Vasastaden and Norrmalm . She has had her name since 1885.

history

Sveavägen had many different names. The oldest known name is Roslagsgatan from the 17th century. Gustav III had big plans with this street, he planned a free line of sight along a boulevard from Stockholm City Palace Stockholms slott in the old town Gamla Stan to the north over the lake Brunnsviken to the "Great Haga Castle" in Hagapark . However, the plan never came to fruition.

In 1866, the town planner and politician Albert Lindhagen presented the proposal for a new development plan for the northern parts of Stockholm, in which a 70 meter wide Sveaväg (as wide as the Champs-Elysées ) was planned, nothing came of it, but until 1942 This line of sight was found in the plans for the renovation of Norrmalm of the Stockholm building authority.

Modern times

Today the Sveavägen begins at Norrtull in the north and ends in the south at Sergels Torg , the center of Stockholm. The Kulturhuset , the five city skyscrapers and the Konserthuset are located here . To the north, the line of sight is definitely blocked by the Wenner-Gren high-rise. The Stockholm City Library designed by architect Gunnar Asplund is also located on Sveavägen .
