The Swinemünder street is a street in the Berlin districts of Mitte and Gesundbrunnen , both in the district of Mitte . It runs from Zionskirchplatz in a northerly direction to just behind Ramlerstrasse. There it goes into the Swinemünde Bridge . This is also known in Berlin as the million dollar bridge.

The Berlin Gesundbrunnen train station, which has been rebuilt or rebuilt in recent years, is located directly on the bridge . At the southern end of the street, where the house numbers are counted, is the Zionskirche . The street crosses the Arkonaplatz , which was renovated and partially redesigned in the 1980s , in the form of a pedestrian zone . A flea market is held here every Sunday.

Construction of the wall in 1961

With the construction of the Berlin Wall on August 13, 1961, Swinemünder Strasse was divided, as it ran over the sector boundary and thus passed from the Soviet to the French sector. It came to an abrupt end near house number 20, which was still in the eastern part of Berlin , and the count was not changed. On the opposite side of the street you suddenly found number 113 - the house numbers 21–112 were now in the western sector - the former district of Wedding . At the wall, Swinemünder Straße was crossed by Bernauer Straße , which was located directly on the sector border, but already in the western part , which was de facto a synonym for the division of the city.

Is located at the intersection of Bernauer Strasse memorial stone with the names of victims at the Berlin Wall that were killed in this area of the Berlin Wall during escape attempts.

particularities

In the 1890s, at number 42, there was the Swinemünder Strasse society house with a theater and ballroom as well as a small theater hall.

Until the end of the Second World War , the tram ran along the entire length of Swinemünder Strasse. In front of the house at Swinemünder Straße 56 there are rails that were re-laid in 1988 as a reminder of the tram. Until 1958, the street was only used between Rügener and Ramlerstraße as part of a turning loop in the direction of Brunnenstraße. The course of the rails at that time can still be seen on the paving in Ramlerstrasse.

It is noticeable that in the (former) western part of Swinemünder Straße most of the houses destroyed by the Second World War were demolished and rebuilt.

In the eastern part, on the other hand, the old buildings remained standing because the funds for a complete new construction were not available. They were only poorly repaired, so that, for example, apartments with outside toilets could be found here until the late 1970s. A more extensive renovation of the existing old buildings took place in the early 1980s - combined with the renovation of the Arkonaplatz residential area . For example, Erich Honecker handed over the two millionth renovated apartment to a Berlin working-class family in the house at Swinemünder Strasse 120 in 1984.

Swinemünder Strasse is designed as a pedestrian zone between Bernauer and Gleim-corner Rügener Strasse, which (at least officially) can only be used by the police and fire brigade.
