The Swinetunnel is a road tunnel under the Swine in Poland that is being planned . It will connect the western part of the city of Swinoujscie , located on the island of Usedom, with the smaller eastern part, located on the island of Wollin , be 1.76 kilometers long and have a two-lane carriageway. An emergency tunnel is to be built next to the main tunnel with a diameter of 12 meters. After the contract was signed on September 17, 2018, the Swinetunnel will be built by the Austrian consortium leader Porr and is expected to be completed in 2022. Originally, an Italian consortium of companies from Astaldi and Ghella was awarded the tender , but was later canceled. The construction costs are given as 225 million euros . Financing is provided by EU funds , with 15 percent of the costs to be borne by the city of Swinoujscie. The tunnel boring machine is being supplied from China.

According to a report by the Infrastructure Ministry of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania , after the completion of the tunnel, considerably more heavy goods traffic is to be expected on the island of Usedom ( Bundesstraße 110 ) if the existing limitation of the Garz border crossing to vehicles with a permissible total weight of up to 7.5 tons is lifted would. Even without the Swine crossing, total traffic is expected to increase by 13% by 2030.
