Syed Babar Ali

Syed Babar Ali (* 1926 in Lahore , Pakistan ) is a Pakistani businessman, philanthropist and former Minister of Finance of Pakistan.

Life

Syed Babar Ali attended Aitchison College, Lahore from 1934 to 1943 . He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1947 , returned to Pakistan and received his bachelor's degree from Punjab University . From 1955 to 1973 he was managing director of the Pakistani company Packages Limited , which manufactures and trades in paper, cardboard, cardboard lids, packaging materials and hygiene products; and to which he is still connected in an advisory capacity. He founded joint ventures with multinational corporations, e.g. B. Tetra Pak (Sweden), Coca-Cola ( USA ), Nestlé ( Switzerland ) and Mitsubishi ( Japan ). He has also been involved in the development of various other Pakistani companies and on behalf of the government. In 1973 he studied at Harvard Business School . In 1986 he was one of the founders of the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) . He was Finance Minister of Pakistan in the interim government of Ahmad Qureshi Menuddin from July 23, 1993 to October 19, 1993. From 1996 to 1999 he was the President of the World Wide Fund For Nature international. He also serves as the honorary consul general of Sweden in Lahore.

Syed Babar Ali is a Shiite Muslim . He is the son of Syed Ali Maratib, who was a prominent Lahore business leader. On his mother's side, he comes from the Lahore fakir khana family. He is the brother of the industrialist Syed Wajid Ali.

In 2020, Babar Ali was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
