Autumn mood in the Tösstal

The Tösstal is a region in the east of the canton of Zurich in Switzerland . The landscape of the river Töss was strongly influenced and the city of Winterthur divides it into an eastern and a western part.

The lower Tösstal is west of Winterthur and the upper Tösstal is southeast of the city. Above all, the upper part, the Tössbergland , with its steep Nagelfluh walls and wild forests, is a local recreation area that is worth protecting. Chamois , capercaillie and wild lynx live in the side valleys, some of which are almost untouched .

Upper Tösstal

Anyone who speaks of the Tösstal usually only means this part. The Töss rises on the Tössstock and then flows west of the Strahlegg through the district of Steg in the Tösstal of the Fischenthal municipality , along the hamlets of Lipperschwendi and Wellenau to Bauma , past Juckern, Blitterswil, Saland and Tablat to Wila , Turbenthal , Zell , Rikon and Kollbrunn , before it flows through the Linsental south of the Eschenberg to Sennhof and finally reaches the Winterthur district of Töss .

Lower Töss Valley

In the lower Töss valley, downstream from the east, in Wülflingen , the Eulach flows into the Töss. To the west, the Töss flows through the Winterthur districts of Töss and Wülflingen and the communities Neftenbach , Pfungen , Dättlikon , Embrach , Rorbas and Freienstein-Teufen , where it flows into the Rhine at Tössegg .

history

The first settlement of the upper Töss valley by Celts is considered likely. After the Romans had withdrawn from the Winterthur ( Vitudurum ) area, the Alemanni advanced into the Töss Valley.

In the 19th century, water power was the basis of a flourishing textile industry that settled along the course of the river. In addition to working in the factories, the poor peasant population earned their money by carving wooden spoons, which gave the region the name Chellenland (Swiss German: Chelle = German: cooking spoon ). However, the water power of the Töss also repeatedly led to floods and caused the region a lot of destruction.

The Tösstalbahn was completed in 1876, connecting the cities of Winterthur and Rapperswil . The driving force behind the implementation was the Swiss railway builder Adolf Guyer-Zeller , who also initiated the construction of the Jungfrau Railway . The steam train was one of the last in Switzerland to be in operation until 1956; To this day, the Zürcher Oberland Steam Railway Association continues to operate steam locomotives on the Hinwil - Bauma route .
