history

Emergence and privatization

TDF emerged from the split up of the French public broadcaster ORTF in 1975 and was initially directly subordinate to the French broadcasting authority. TDF has gradually lost its monopoly on radio broadcasts in France since 1982 and has been completely competitive in all its activities since 2003.

In 1987 TDF was converted into a private company. From 1991 it was then a 100% subsidiary of France Télécom ; this sold in 2002 a majority of 63% of the capital to a consortium of Caisse des Dêpots et Consignations and Charterhouse. In 2005 France Télécom left the company for good.

International expansion

The international expansion of TDF begins in 2000, initially with the acquisition of a 49% stake in Levira in Estonia, followed in 2001 by the acquisition of MCR (Monte Carlo Radiodiffusion) in Monaco. Further acquisitions are PSN (Poland) in 2002, the purchase of Axion in Spain (2004), Digita in Finland (2003), Antenna Hungaria in Hungary (2007). Also in 2007, Alticom was founded in the Netherlands. Media Broadcast in Germany was acquired by Deutsche Telekom in 2008 .

Change of shareholders and restructuring

Since 2006, TDF's capital has been held by a consortium of private equity investors: Ardian (formerly Axa Private Equity ) (with 18%), Charterhouse Capital Partners (14%), Texas Pacific Group (42%), Caisse des Dépôts et consignations (24%) and others (2%). In 2014, the majority of the company's assets, consisting mainly of its activities in France, were sold to a new investor group around the Canadian infrastructure funds Brookfield and Public Sector Pension Investment Board (PSP Investments), as well as APG Asset Management and Arcus Infrastructure Partners - the other activities remained with the previous investors and were gradually sold by them, including Media Broadcast in Germany, which went to Freenet in April 2015 .
