history

Gym on Widenmayerstrasse around 1911

The Jahn Munich gymnastics club from 1887 has existed in its current form since October 8, 1947 through the merger of the two traditional Munich clubs, the Munich gymnastics club from 1887 and the TSV Jahn Munich from 1900.

Both clubs originally had stately buildings and halls in the Schwabing district on Nordendstrasse and in Lehel on Widenmayerstrasse . There are also large outdoor sports facilities in Freimann and in Haar near Munich . The buildings of both facilities were destroyed by bombing in 1944 and could no longer be used. In order to be able to resume sports and gymnastics, the members chose the merger of the two original clubs as the solution for a quick reconstruction of a new club facility. With great personal contribution, a small gymnastics hall and a large sports hall were again created on Widenmayerstrasse. Since there was only a limited heritable building right for the site on Widenmayerstraße, a new building site had to be found. After overcoming many hurdles, the city was able to give the site on Weltenburger Strasse to the association under heritable building rights in 1967 for the necessary construction work. The new sports facilities were opened in January 1971. Since then, Weltenburgerstrasse 53 has been the main domicile for TS Jahn. The other two systems in Freimann and Haar are also managed from there. The sporting successes of members and teams of the club are extensive: In addition to Olympic medals and German championships, many successes were achieved on a regional level. A comprehensive summary as well as a detailed report on the history of the association is contained in the chronicle 125 years of association history historically and from a human perspective , which was published in 2012.

Departments and sports offers

basketball

Champion team from 1947

TS Jahn Munich and its predecessor club TSV Jahn are among the pioneers of German basketball. In 1937, Arno Sollmann, a pre-war national player, founded the club's basketball department. 1938 first Munich champion, the men finished fourth in the first German championship in 1939 as Bavarian Gaumeister. After a break due to the war, however, it was the women who won the first two German championships in women's basketball in 1947 and 1948, and also in 1950 and 1951. The same happened in 1953 for the U20 youngsters. After that, the club played no role in national basketball for a long time, the men played in the regional league for several years in the 80s, at that time the third-highest class. In 1980 the women rose to the then double-track first division and in the same season reached the semi-finals of the German championship. But after qualifying for the newly created one-piece Bundesliga in 1982, the team disintegrated and after several relegations it even broke up in 1989. The men’s team took the same route, around the turn of the millennium basketball was down, only individual boys’s teams (kept alive by Bernhard Knull and Stefan Steiner) and a senior team remained in play. In the first decade of the new century, the department was revitalized by intensifying youth work on the initiative of Armin Sperber, first in the female area (with four Final Four participations) and then by Niko Heinrichs in the male area with the success that from youth work some national youth players have emerged and the club meanwhile (as of 2014) has the youth department with the largest number of members in Bavaria.

Since the 2011/12 season, the first women's team has been playing in the 2nd league south after taking over the license from SV Germering (the most famous player is the former national player Magdalena von Geyr), the second team since 2009 in the regional league. In the junior division, all age groups take part in the highest leagues in their age group. The female youth has been a permanent member of the WNBL since 2010, the male youth has been represented in the JBBL since 2014 .

Detailed information on match operations and schedules for more than 20 teams is available on the Jahn Basketball website.

Budo

The budo department of TS Jahn Munich was established in 1976. The first trainers were Thomas Benesch (Shōtōkan karate), Hiromichi Nagano (Aikido) and Harunobu Matsuba (judo, karate). The karate group was continued by the trainers Isolde Betz and Wolfgang Spielvogel, later taken over by Nicolai Mladenoff. After the departure of. H. Nagano Aikido is no longer available, Judo was taught by H. Matsuba until 2014. Many successful judoka have emerged from the judo group over the years, and the department has repeatedly organized large courses and training camps. Today the budo department offers the following martial arts styles: Judo (trainer Carlos Aristizabal, 1st Dan), Okinawa-Gōjū-Ryū-Karate (trainer Nicolai Mladenoff, 5th Dan), Kobudō (trainer Eckart Josephs, 2nd Dan) and Vovinam Viêt Võ Dao (trainer Dietmar Thom, 4th Dan).

Handball

In 1920 various athletes from the then TV Jahn got together and founded a handball team. But it wasn't until 1927 that a handball department was founded. The men's team became district champions in the 2nd division. The youth and women's teams were also in the forefront during these seasons. However, these good developments came to an abrupt end with the Second World War . Only in 1947 was it possible to play handball again. With the merger of the Munich gymnastics union and the handball team of the Freimann Free Gymnastics Association, there was again the opportunity to build on the first successes. In 1954 the men's team rose to the state league, and in 1965 they became district champions. The women started playing in 1949. In 1972 and 1982 the promotion to the district class was celebrated and in 1986 they played for promotion to the Bavarian Oberliga. In the mid-80s, the company moved from the Großfeld in Freimann to the hall on Weltenburger Strasse. As long as the handball association allowed it, you played at both locations. Outside in summer, indoors in winter. The last big successes in youth were in the 2005/2006 season, when both the male A and male B youth champions became champions in the Upper Bavaria district.

There are currently three male teams in the youth division (D, C and B youth) and a male team in the adult division who plays in the district class. The goal of the men's team is to return to the district league. We are always looking for reinforcements for the youth teams to expand the teams.

Detailed information on match operations and schedules in our handball department can be found at the BHV .

Children's sports school

The KISS ( children's sports school ) is one of the youngest groups in TS Jahn Munich. It was founded in 2003, and in 2007 the BLSV presented it with the official seal of approval. This underlines the quality of the KISS im Jahn. Currently (as of 2015) around 190 children (from three to ten years of age) take part in the KISS lessons and receive versatile, health-oriented and cross-sports basic training from the qualified trainers.

Running club

The running club was one of the first to be founded in Munich in 1979 and has long experience. Since 1992, the running club has concentrated more on the popular sport aspect and offers runners of all levels a training opportunity. In cooperation with the BR Abendschau , the Lauftreff has participated in the Lauf10 campaign every year since 2008.

athletics

The athletics department merged in 2007 with seven other athletics clubs from Munich (now 11 member clubs). Since then, it has competed in competitions under the name LG Stadtwerke München from the age group of 12 . Since the cooperation, the Jahnathleten have achieved numerous successes not only at the regional level in the school and youth sector. In the meantime there are also participations in the German championship. This cooperation again led to a steady increase in members. There are now 6 training groups in the school and youth area. The training with committed trainers enables participation in regional championships as well as participation in German championships.

Rhythmic sports gymnastics

The RSG (rhythmic gymnastics) has existed at the Turnerschaft Jahn München since the 1960s.

In the last 50 years numerous Upper Bavarian and Bavarian championship titles have been won in individual and group competitions. The gymnasts also qualified for participation in national competitions and won several titles here. These successes confirm the good work with young people in the club. In the beginners lessons there are always many talented girls who want to continue the tradition of the Jahn Munich gymnastics club.

tennis

Tennis is played on both facilities: At Weltenburger Straße 53, 8 clay courts are available exclusively for members of the tennis department; On the Freisinger Landstrasse, the three clay courts can also be used by guest players.

Table tennis

Table tennis is a small department with around 70 members in the large Jahn family. Adults and teenagers train several times a week in the multi-purpose hall. Currently (as of 2015) 4 men's teams are participating in the game. The 1st team plays in the 2nd district league, the 2nd team plays in the 3rd district league. The other two teams play in the 4th district league.

do gymnastics

The gymnastics department is one of the founding departments of TS Jahn. While the male athletes dominated in the early days, it is now the female athletes who compete in the performance area of the gymnastics department. The approximately 100 active gymnasts are part of the Bavarian Turnverband e. V., Turngau Munich, and can boast numerous successes. In order to secure the next generation, the gymnastics department offers "parent and child gymnastics" as well as gymnastics lessons for small children. In addition, there is "adult gymnastics" for men and women in order to serve popular sports. The club's own year-end event is largely organized by the gymnastics department through self-choreographed performance shows.

Volleyball and beach volleyball

The volleyball department was founded in 1977. It all started with a women's team and a men's team that rose to the Bayern league. The youth work began in 1980. Some young people made it into the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga. People were and are also very active in the leisure sector. Two teams are currently training three times a week.

In 1994 two beach volleyball fields were set up on their own initiative. Bavarian mixed championships have already been held here. At the moment, two adult teams and 8 youth teams take part in the game.
