Tabu is a boardroom communication game by Brian Hersch , the author of Outburst . Hasbro moved it in 1990 under the brand MB-Spiele . It was later sold under the Parker Spiele brand and directly under Hasbro. According to the publisher, over 20 million games have now been sold worldwide.

Rules of the game

A time master is required for this. This measures the time and calls STOP when the hourglass has expired. A squeak master is also required. He uses the horn when a teammate says a term that is "taboo", i.e. not allowed to use it according to the card (see below).

The game revolves around explaining terms. In the popular party game , in which any number of people can take part, a player explains a term to his team and is not allowed to use any of the five taboo words or any part of the word he is looking for. For example, neither “ice” nor “bear” should be used with “polar bear”. In addition, other obvious terms that are on the playing card may not be used, e.g. B. in the example "polar bear" that would be "snow" and "arctic". In addition, the time master starts the game by turning the hourglass over. A player from the opposing team watches over this with a horn in his hand, which he sounds when there is a rule violation or when the time has elapsed. The player tries to explain as many terms as possible within a given time. There is one point for each guessed term. If a player cannot explain a term because it is too difficult or it takes too much time, he may skip the card. No point will be deducted. If a taboo word is used, the player must move on to the next term and one point is deducted. It is guessed in turns until one team scores 50 points. In the new editions, the game comes with a game board for counting the points.

Variations

In the meantime, further editions with new guess cards and game variants have appeared. Mention should be made:

  • Tabu (1990), original variant
  • Celebrity Taboo (1993)
  • Tabu Junior (1994); variant adapted for children
  • Tabu Body Talk (2001), also by Brian Hersch; the point here is to form a mute teammate
  • Tabu Hot Pen (2002); Here, in the style of the Monday painter, the term to be guessed is developed graphically
  • Tabu XXL (2006); combines other versions and offers four different game variants:
    • Explain terms pantomime with the help of knot knut (small stuffed animal with long arms)
    • Draw terms
    • Explain as many terms as possible with 15 individual keywords
    • Explain terms without using one of the 5 taboo words (classic variant)

Hasbro currently only offers Tabu, Tabu XXL and Tabu Junior. Some of the other variants can still be found in stores.

The Trinidadian Doh Say Dat is a modification of the game that uses terms from the Trinidadian Creole .
