Tara Geraghty-Moats (born April 12, 1993 in West Fairlee , Vermont ) is an American winter athlete who is active as a ski jumper and Nordic combined athlete and has also been a biathlete in between .
Career
Ski jumping
Geraghty-Moats started skiing and Nordic combined as a teenager. At the age of 12 in October 2005, she was nominated for the Ski Jumping Continental Cup for the first time , but did not take part in Lake Placid . Two years later, in August 2007, it started and immediately achieved the points with 18th place. She was also successful in the second competition one day later. However, it took another year until she competed again in international competitions. In December 2008 she started in Park City and reached 27th place twice, with which she reached 75th place overall at the end of the season. This was her last international appearance as a special jumper for a long time.
At the US Ski Jumping Championships in 2014, she was 5th on the normal hill. At the US Championships in 2015, she reached 4th place on the normal hill and 2nd place on the large hill.
Her best result so far in the Women's Ski Jumping World Cup she achieved on February 8, 2015 on the Trambulina Valea Cărbunării normal hill in Râșnov, Romania, with ninth place. She then finished 18th at the 2015 World Championships in Falun, Sweden . In 2015/16 she was 28th in the overall World Cup ranking, which is her best overall ranking in ski jumping so far.
At the US Championships in 2016, Geraghty-Moats became champion of the normal hill of the MacKenzie Intervale Ski Jumping Complex in Lake Placid . Two years later, she was able to take second place behind Nita Englund on both the large hill and the normal hill at the 2018 US Championships in Park City .
At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2019 in Seefeld , Geraghty-Moats took tenth place together with Logan Sankey , Nina Lussi and Nita Englund in the women's team competition, which was held for the first time. At the end of the season, Geraghty-Moats announced that she would now concentrate on Nordic combined, which is why she is no longer in the ski jumping squad for the 2019/20 season. Contrary to contrary claims, she started the 2019/20 World Cup in Lillehammer , where she did not make any competition jumps after a fall in qualification. Due to a small number of competitions in her main discipline, she started in Villach in the FIS Cup in mid-February 2020 , where she reached the points.
Nordic combination
On October 13, 2014, Geraghty-Moats became the first US female champion in Nordic combined. Besides Gabby Armstrong, she was only one of two athletes.
At the Grand Prix on August 18, 2018 in Oberwiesenthal , Geraghty-Moats started for the first time in an FIS competition in Nordic Combined . With the second place behind the Russian Stefanija Nadymowa she reached the podium directly. A day later, she was able to win the second competition ahead of the Russian, which she and Nadymova won the overall ranking of the Grand Prix.
At the beginning of the second edition of the Women's Continental Cup in Nordic Combined, Geraghty-Moats competed in this series for the first time on December 14, 2018. She won the first competition of the new 2018/19 season in the local Steamboat Springs . She was also able to dominate the rest of the competitions with one exception. With ten wins in eleven competitions, Geraghty-Moats won the overall ranking of the Continental Cup by a clear margin.
In summer 2019 Geraghty-Moats won three of the four competitions of the 2019 Grand Prix . In the last competition she was disqualified, so that she only found herself in second place in the overall standings. She continued to lead the field at the start of the Continental Cup and won all three competitions on the opening weekend in Park City. At the 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Lausanne , Geraghty-Moats supported the participating Nordic combined women as a role model and symbolic figure. There she caught a cold, which prevented her from starting the second competition weekend in Rena . On her return to Eisenerz , she had to fight for the first time in a Continental Cup race and be satisfied with second place behind Anju Nakamura . With a total of five wins this season, Geraghty-Moats finally defended the overall victory.
biathlon
In 2010 Geraghty-Moats switched to biathlon as part of a school exchange in Sweden . There she was a student at the Sollefteå biathlon high school . At the Biathlon Junior World Championships 2011 in Nové Město na Moravě she reached 66th place in singles, 58th place in sprint, 57th place in the pursuit and ranked 13th with the relay. A year later at the Biathlon Junior World Championships 2012 in Kontiolahti she was able to rank 44 in the individual, rank 18 in the sprint and rank 52 in the pursuit achieve a significant improvement. However , she was never nominated for a place in the biathlon world cup . At the Biathlon Junior World Championships 2013 in Obertilliach , Geraghty-Moats achieved 62nd place in the individual and sprint. As an American who trains with the Swedes, she started in the open competitions of the Biathlon European Championships 2013 in Bansko . She was 40th in the individual and 37th in the sprint. She was lapped in the pursuit. With the season she reached the tenth place.
