The Tattoo Convention Frankfurt is the world's largest tattoo fair and has been held annually in Frankfurt since 1993 .
history
In 1993 the organizer Thomas “Tommy” Köhler, owner of a tattoo studio and founding member of the professional organization German Organized Tattooists (DOT), opened the first Tattoo Convention in Frankfurt . At that time 40 exhibitors came, at that time still in the forum on the exhibition grounds. This convention was the first to be followed by wide media coverage. Programs such as Hans Meiser and Vera am Mittag reported on the event. In 2009 there were already 400 and in 2018 more than 700 exhibitors from all over the world presented themselves. The tattoo scene of Europe and the world was gathered; Tattoo artists from Asia, but also Russia, from Poland and Italy, Norway, from the USA and Canada.
“'We started the fair back then to make tattooing socially acceptable,' says Tommy Köhler, a bearded guy whose face is hidden behind a full beard. Tattoos, according to Köhler, would have been associated with prison brothers and fights. 'Today the banker sits here next to the punk.' "
“There were a lot of tattoo artists who came and went. In the past few decades, dozens of tattoo artists and big names on the scene appeared whose names definitely belong in this hall of fame. But there are only a few who have made a name for themselves in several respects for the national and international tattoo scene. One of these special people is Thomas "Tommy" Köhler. "
Trivia
The organizers of the Tattoo Convention Frankfurt, Stefan and Tommy Köhler, regularly hold a raffle for the benefit of Help for Children with Cancer Frankfurt eV.
Frankfurt is considered a traditional location for tattoo meetings. From October 17th to 19th, 1980 in Frankfurt am Main, the tattoo artist Horst Linienbach organized what was probably the first tattoo convention in Germany.
