Tauno Käyhkö (born May 6, 1950 in Rovaniemi ) is a former Finnish and later Canadian ski jumper .

Career

Käyhkö started for the first time in the Four Hills Tournament 1969/70 at an international tournament. However, the tour was largely unsuccessful. His best placement was a 22nd place in Bischofshofen . At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1970 in Vysoké Tatry , he reached 5th place on the large hill.

The Four Hills Tournament 1970/71 went far better for Käyhkö than the previous one. In the first competition in Oberstdorf , he came in 9th place in the top ten. At the New Year's competition in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , he stood on the podium for the first time in his career and finished jumping in 3rd place. After he reached the 7th place in Innsbruck , he repeated his success from Partenkirchen in Bischofshofen. In the end, he was fourth in the overall ranking of the tour.

The 1971/72 Four Hills Tournament began just as the previous one had ended. In the opening competition in Innsbruck he jumped to 3rd place. In the second competition in Garmisch-Partenkirchen he reached 2nd place. In Oberstdorf, however, it was only enough for a 12th place. In Bischofshofen, too, he missed a top position with 31st place. Nevertheless, in the end it was enough for 3rd place in the tour's overall ranking. At the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo, Japan, and the Nordic World Ski Championships, which took place at the same time, he took 4th place on the large hill. On the normal hill he was tied with Henry Glaß in 18th place.

In the following years he could not repeat his successes in the Four Hills Tournament and usually only ended up in the back places. In the Nordic World Ski Championships 1974 in Sweden's Falun he was on the normal hill in sixth.

In 1975 Käyhkö changed the association and started for Canada from then on . At the Nordic World Ski Championships 1978 in Lahti Käyhkö reached the 5th place on the large hill. In 1979 he was part of the Canadian squad for the newly created Ski Jumping World Cup . He competed in his first World Cup competition on December 30, 1979 in Oberstdorf . On January 12, 1980, after an unsuccessful Four Hills Tournament 1979/80 in Sapporo , he was able to win World Cup points for the first time with 10th place. Also at the World Cup in his new home Canada in Thunder Bay , he achieved World Cup points with 6th place. However, it was his last World Cup, and so he ended the season in 55th place in the overall World Cup standings.

At the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid Käyhkö reached a 26th place on the large hill and a 30th place on the normal hill.

After the Olympic Games, Käyhkö ended his active ski jumping career at the age of 30.
